Lessons from my first Parkrun

Paul Tompsett running at the Belton House Parkrun

As a graphic designer, I always emphasise the importance of consistency in branding.

But recently, I experienced firsthand how consistency applies beyond design, I participated in my first Parkrun at the picturesque Belton House, just outside Grantham. The stunning location and perfect weather set the stage for an unforgettable experience. However, my lack of preparation left me feeling exhausted. Here’s what I learned about consistency and how it applies to both running and design.

The power of preparation

Acting on instinct can be exhilarating, but it doesn’t always give the best results. Just like in design, where planning and attention to detail matter, preparing for a race is crucial. Had I trained more effectively, my Parkrun time would likely have improved, and I wouldn’t have felt drained afterward. Consistency in training pays off, whether you’re designing a logo or putting on your trainers.

Weathering the elements

Belton House’s scenic route was a treat for the eyes, but the weather favored spectators more than runners. Just as a brand must adapt to different market conditions, I had to (or should have) adjusted my pace to the elements. Consistency doesn’t mean rigidity it means adapting while maintaining core principles. Brands evolve, and so do runners. Flexibility ensures longevity.

The post-run reflection

After the Parkrun, I reflected on my performance. Similarly, brands should regularly assess their strategies. What worked? What didn’t? Consistent evaluation leads to growth. As a designer, I’ll look at my work, seeking areas for improvement. Brands should do the same – constantly refining their messaging, visuals and customer experience.

Training for success

My takeaway? Consistent effort pays dividends. Whether it’s logging miles or refining a brand’s visual identity, progress comes from steady work. As I do some training for the next Parkrun, I’ll remember that consistency isn’t just a design principle – it’s a life principle.

Consistency isn’t a buzzword; it’s the backbone of success. Whether you’re designing logos or chasing personal records, the path to greatness lies in steady, intentional effort. So, let’s put in the work, stay consistent, and watch our results soar.
